Check-In Guide

At g0v Summit, we've partnered with the Ministry of Digital Affairs (MoDA) to adopt the Digital Credential Wallet as the primary check-in method. The Digital Credential Wallet is one of the rare Taiwanese government projects that committed to open source as a procurement goal from the very beginning โ€” with everything from servers to mobile apps released publicly. The volunteers of this year's g0v Summit share the spirit of Public Money, Public Code, and hope to collectively explore an identity verification process that is transparent, trustworthy, privacy-preserving, and supports selective disclosure. We welcome everyone to join us in this experiment! For clarity, "credential" below refers to a ticket stored in the TW DIW.

Check-In with the TW DIW (Recommended; requires online purchase and a sufficiently recent Android or iOS device)

  1. Download the Ministry of Digital Affairs' "Taiwan Digital Identity Wallet" app from the Google Play Store or iOS App Store and complete the initial setup.
  2. When the pre-event email is sent, it will include a credential QR code link containing your ticket information. Scan or open the link using the TW DIW app to add your ticket credential to the wallet.
  3. At the check-in venue, a verification QR code will be displayed. Scan it with the app to preview what credential information the conference is requesting from you.
  4. Confirm and submit to complete check-in.

Online Registration, Offline Check-In (requires online purchase)

  1. To view your purchased ticket, follow these steps.
  2. Note down your ticket number (a sequence starting with "T", e.g., T123456789).
  3. At the venue, visit the information desk and provide your ticket number to complete check-in.

Cash Purchase Check-In

Purchasing with cash on-site completes your check-in at the same time.

About the TW DIW

What exactly is the TW DIW, and why use it?

As governments worldwide increasingly move toward controlling digital identity, balancing basic identity verification with privacy protection on the internet is a challenge that both public and private sectors struggle with. If led entirely by governments, there's a risk of mass collection and surveillance of personal data; without any standards, companies facing verification needs might each develop their own tracking methods that are even more privacy-invasive.

To reach a consensus, OpenID Foundation, W3C, and IETF have all had dedicated working groups in long-running discussions. Building on the vision of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and various Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) technologies, the community ultimately converged on Verifiable Credentials (VC) as a shared standard.

The TW DIW developed by the Ministry of Digital Affairs is built on the OpenID4VC standard, establishing a three-party architecture of issuer โ€” verifier โ€” holder, all with open-source code. This means the issuing and verifying servers, as well as the app for storing credentials, can all be self-hosted by anyone without relying on a centrally managed database. We also hope this trial will help verify whether the project meets international standards, and potentially interoperate with other global implementations such as the EU's EUDI Wallet.

Will my data be sent to the Ministry of Digital Affairs? Is it safe? โ–พ

Registration data is only accessible to volunteers with a need to know (including relevant members of the administration, logistics, and development teams). The source code for the issuing and verifying servers is provided by the Ministry of Digital Affairs, but the servers are set up and operated by g0v Summit volunteers on Summit-dedicated infrastructure โ€” no data is sent to the Ministry of Digital Affairs. The data used to issue credentials comes solely from the conference ticketing system (OEN). Credential data is stored only on the g0v Summit server and within the app of users who choose to use the wallet. Check-in records are stored solely on the g0v Summit server and will be deleted after the conference. The servers and database are maintained by long-time g0v contributors who are professional software engineers, and we follow open-source best practices to ensure database security.

What data will the conference request from me? โ–พ

The credentials issued through the TW DIW will only contain data that attendees have already provided through the conference ticketing system (OEN) โ€” and not all of it. In accordance with the principle of data minimization, only the necessary information will be included in the credential and requested during verification. For example, using the selective disclosure feature of the TW DIW, we only need to request a field sufficient to prevent duplicate check-ins (such as your ticket number) โ€” not the full contents of your credential. Before submitting your verification data, you can review what we're requesting in the app. For other use cases, such as picking up a bento box, the conference only needs to know your dietary preference (meat/vegetarian) and will not request any additional personal information.

Why don't you compile the app from source for attendees to install, or integrate it into OPass? โ–พ

No time... QQ

Do I have to check in using the TW DIW? โ–พ

No. We understand that not everyone has a compatible device, or may have stricter privacy concerns. You can check in using just your ticket number and registration information at the venue. We even offer a cash purchase and check-in option. For those who purchase with cash on-site, your data will not pass through the conference ticketing system (OEN) or any of the conference's online systems at all. See the "Online Registration, Offline Check-In" and "On-Site Cash Purchase" sections above for details!

Finally, on the second day of the Summit, there will be an open forum dedicated to discussing the TW DIW, as well as a workshop sharing the implementation process. Bring your questions and ideas โ€” we'd love to have you there!
